USPS Mailbox Requirements

!±8± USPS Mailbox Requirements

The United States Postal Service has specific requirements for all residential curbside mail boxes. The USPS Domestic Mail Manual sets forth regulations and rules concerning residential curbside mailboxes. The manual describes the standards for letterboxes and other mail receptacles for the deposit or receipt of mail.

Residential Mailboxes
A residential mailbox is any curbside or wall-mounted receptacle which is used for the purpose of receiving material in which postage is paid.

Who Can Use A Mailbox
Only authorized letter carriers may place mail or packages into the mail receptacle. No part of the mail receptacle may be used to deliver anything that does not contain postage. This includes items attached to the box, hung from the box or inserted into the mail box. Any mailable material not displaying postage and found in the mailbox is subject to the same amount of postage as if it were carried by a mail carrier.

Exclusions from USPS Rules
Door slots and other non-lockable bins used with apartment mailboxes are subject to the same regulations as a curbside mailbox. Just keep in mind that a mail slot should be large enough to accommodate the type of mail the homeowner receives. If the mail slot is not large enough, then the mail carrier will cease delivering mail to the residence.

Curbside Mailboxes
All homeowners must keep the area around their mailboxes clear of anything than will obstruct the safe delivery of mail. If the United States Postal Service employee cannot safely reach in and deliver the mail, the postmaster may withdraw delivery to that mailbox.

Any curbside mailbox which is to be installed at the edge of the roadway or curbside of the street and allows it to be served by a mail carrier from a vehicle on any city route, rural route or highway must be approved by the United States Postal Service.

Every curbside mailbox should display the homeowner's name and address assigned by the local authorities on the flag side of the mailbox. The numbers and letters must be at least one inch high and in a contrasting color in neat, legible letters. If the boxes are grouped and the address cannot be placed on the flag side of the mailbox, then the house number should be inscribed on the door. No advertising of any kind can be placed on the mailbox or the mailbox post.

Mailbox Sizes
There are regulations regarding curbside mailboxes. A curbside mailbox can be one of three size for residential mail: small T1 (C1) size is approximately 5 inches wide by 6 inches tall and 18 ½ inches long, Medium T2 (C2) size is approximately 6 inches wide by 7 inches tall by 19 inches long, and the Large T3 (C3) size is approximately 8 inches wide by 11 ½ inches tall by 22 ½ inches long. The "T" stands for Traditional and the "C" stands for Contemporary. The dimensions reflect the minimum interior size.

Lockable Mailboxes
A locking curbside mail box will help to deter most thieves from stealing your mail. Many residential mailboxes are available with a built-in locking mechanism. If your mailbox is not equipped with a lock, you can purchase one from several online sources. Locks are essential for deterring thieves and are extremely important when the homeowner is away for several days and unable to retrieve the mail. Also note that the U.S. Postal Service will not open locked boxes nor will they accept a key for that purpose. Locks can be installed on both post and wall mounted mailboxes. When installing a lock on an existing mailbox, make sure your mailbox is strong enough to withstand an attack. Lockable mailboxes should be large enough so that if the homeowner is away for several days, it can accommodate the overflow of mail.

Novelty Mailboxes
Novelty mailboxes are mailboxes that have been dressed up or decorated in some fashion. The same rules and regulations apply to novelty mailboxes as do pre-approved and custom-built mailboxes.

Where to Place A Residential Curbside Mailbox
All curbside mailboxes must be placed in a safe and convenient place. The box must be on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel of the mail carrier's normal route. The box should not be placed where it places the mail carrier in a dangerous situation or drive on the incorrect side of the road or violate any traffic laws.

The curbside mailbox post should be positioned 6-8 inches from the curb and approximately 42-46 inches high measured from the lawn to the top of the installed curbside mailbox, not the top of the post. If the post has a vertical arm, the arm should not extend any closer than 6 inches from the curb. When installing your new set, make sure your set complies with these regulations.

Wall Mount Mailboxes
The USPS does not have rules or regulations for wall mount mailboxes, however, you should notify your local mail carrier before installation to ensure proper placement of the mailbox and check for any local codes or regulations governing placement of the mailbox. The product should operate easily and nothing should obstruct the opening and closing of the lid. Also check with your home owners association to see if they have any rules or requirements which you need to comply with.

Building Your Own Mailbox
All custom built curbside mailboxes must meet the same standards as approved mailboxes. Custom built mailboxes should have a flag on the outside, strength, durability and quality should be comparable to approved mailboxes.

Be cautious when building your own mailbox and post. Approximately 100 motorists are killed yearly in collisions with curbside mailboxes. Some posts are mounted in concrete or constructed of indestructible materials. In a collision, a motor vehicle can be severely damaged and its occupants injured or killed.

Mailbox Post
Mailbox posts should be neat and made of material that can adequately support the mailbox. The mailbox post may not represent effigies or caricatures that can disparage or ridicule anyone. The mailbox can be attached to a fixed or movable arm.

Are Locking Mail Boxes Really Secure?

!±8± Are Locking Mail Boxes Really Secure?

There's a reason why the Post Office uses those big locking mailboxes with the locking compartment on the bottom. It's the same reason you should, too.

They do it so people with bad intentions don't steal the mail.

Identity theft is big business-- both doing it and preventing it.

There are two things, however, which will go a long way to preventing your vital information from falling into the wrong hands. A paper shredder, preferably a cross-cut model. And a secure, not just locking, mail box.

So what should you look for when you shop for a secure locking mailbox?

-- A large drop chute with an angled design. Mail should drop into a locked box, where it can wait safely for you to retrieve it. This allows large envelopes and magazines to fall out of the reach of sticky fingers.

-- Plenty of storage room. You want to be able to leave for a few days without having your mail fill the box and stick out the mail slot. A locking mail box with envelopes sticking out defeats the purpose.

-- Sturdy construction. You want your mailbox to look good, and to function properly for years. You also want the mail box to resist attempts to gain entry.

-- Deadbolt locks. Deadbolts are much harder to both pick and pop open than are cheaper spring-type locks.

-- Seperate mechanism for outbound mail. Often this is a clip attached to the outside door box.

Locking mail boxes can either mount on a post, a wall or even built into a pier or pillar to match your home's architecture.

Locks run the gamut, from cheap spring locks to keypad activated deadbolts.

There are enough colors and styles available to enable almost anyone to enjoy mail security without robbing from curb appeal.

Identity thieves are like all other crooks. They look for the easy pickings. Take yourself out of that group by buying and installing a truly secure locking mailbox soon.

Making Your Mail Box Theft Free

!±8± Making Your Mail Box Theft Free

Almost everyone is concerned about identity theft, but most people do not realize that their mailbox could cause them to become a victim. A thief can get instant access to your personal information by targeting an unprotected mailbox. A lot of personal information passes through your mailbox on a daily basis. Credit card offers and bills all contain sensitive personal information that can put your credit and identity at risk.

People automatically consider their home and property in regard to security. Mailboxes should be just as much a concern because they can be broken into easily. In the United States mailbox designs provide a way to collect mail, but fail to provide security for your personal information. As a result identity theft is common. It would be wise to replace your traditional mailbox with one that is safe and secure and made of solid steel. The mailbox should open at the top to allow the mailman accessibility without a problem. A key should be required for the bottom to protect you from a thief having access to the contents of your mailbox.

A solid steel constructed mailbox is almost impossible to break into. They can be found online or at a hardware or department store and are very affordable. Be sure to include a lock and key system to give yourself maximum protection. Mailboxes that are in community neighborhoods often are locked and you will be provided with the key to your particular mailbox.

Another idea for added security is to buy a chime alarm for your mailbox that will make a noise when the mailbox is opened or if anyone tries to access your mailbox. Chime alarms send the signal indoors so you will know if your mail is being tampered with. Most chime alarms will sound a number of times to make sure you hear it. These alarms are also a great way to know when your mailman has delivered new mail.

Burglary and home security remain a big concern, but securing your personal information and protecting yourself from identity theft is just as important. Make the effort to protect yourself by including your mailbox in your plans to secure your home.

Never Worry About Losing Your Keys Again

!±8± Never Worry About Losing Your Keys Again

It seems like the items we spend most of our time searching for are the ones we need and use daily. The best example is our keys. How many of us spend 20 extra minutes every morning before leaving the house searching for our keys, or five minutes waiting outside the front door before we can dig them out of our purse or pockets to let ourselves in? We just toss our keys somewhere different everyday, and then forget where we put them. To always ensure a speedy dash out the front door, follow these practical steps to end the frustration of misplaced keys.

1) Be consistent by always keeping your keys in the same place--hang them on a hook or put them in a designated basket near the door. Regardless of how tired or distracted you may be when you get in the door, take the time to go directly to the spot when you come in to aid in starting this routine.

2) Whether you choose a hook, bowl or basket by the door, make it fun. Buy an inexpensive funky colored hook or pretty bowl that catches your attention. If you immediately hit the fridge when you walk in, keep your keys on top of the fridge. Try to choose somewhere out in the open where you can easily see them.

3) In your bag, briefcase or purse, find a regular home for keys and get them back to this spot just as you would in you home. If you keep your keys in your jacket pocket, stick to one pocket so you always know: your keys are in your right pocket

4) Make sure the keychain you purchase is sturdy. Your key ring holds important items to you - your home, car, office and mailbox. Spend a little more money on your keychain to ensure their safety. Slim down your key ring. Only put frequently used keys, such as your house, car and office, on your daily key chain so you can grab it quickly.

5) Do a key audit. Make sure you know what each key is for and that they work. For easy identification, you can purchase keys cut with designs and patterns. Or for a simple trick, paint the body of the key with a colorful nail polish. Mount a hook rack on the wall and label them for quick and easy access when needed. Keep these keys on rings so you can use a carabineer to quickly group these occasional keys with your every day ones when needed. This also makes it easy for when you need to give someone a key from your set.

6) A good memory is often related to developing good daily habits. The key is to follow the routine of always using the same location. Once the habit kicks in, you will do it without even realizing you did.

7) Mistakes can happen, so keep an extra key at a nearby friend's home, and keep another set in your desk drawer at work. Keep a backup car key in your wallet to avoid those expensive key retrieving costs.

Knowing where your keys are will make leaving your house hassle-free and can be the start to a stress-free routine. With these helpful tips, you'll never have to worry about misplaced keys again.
